Project Objective & Goal :
Promoting sustainable development in the WatSan sector in reshaping the livelihood of the islanders with climate change. The climatic events are thought to be serious in coastal belts and its adverse impacts could be on human health with water supply and hygienic sanitation. There is clear evidence at community and school level that, the integrated water and sanitation programme had a positive impact on the quality of livelihood of the people of the coverage islands. These are mainly focused on the reduction of water and sanitation related diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, and other water‐borne diseases. In addition, a number of benefits are:
- The promotion of handwashing at critical times is a hygiene behavior that has an impact at community, household and school levels.
- Women and girls have improved their feminine hygiene practices.
- The uses of closed containers for storing drinking water ensure the water quality and that reducing contamination.
- School children are found to be ‘active agents of change’ in their respective households and communities.
- Provided safe and accessible water within close proximity to the village, women can now spend more of their time looking for food, carryout other household tasks and engagement in income generation activities.
- improved social status, Improved Community Infrastructure, adaptive capacity increased for vulnerable people of coastal communities to managed and plan for climate change impacts.
- Built capacity to the community people for modern cultivation practices and diversity of livelihood.
