Location :
160 Union under 25 District # Local NGOs, authorities and health institutions are trained and enabled to combat the problem of arsenic contamination efficiently.
Project Objective & Goal :

  • The general objective of the project is to improve the overall quality of the arsenic groundwater-affected communities.
  • Arsenic contamination is declared as the national problem in the early 90?s. Due to illiteracy, superstitions and lack of proper information in the government and non-government level, the arsenic problem is still a serious crisis at certain rural areas of Bangladesh. It is believed by many rural communities that Arsenic poisoning is a curse of nature or a contagious disease. In most cases the affected people and families are so poor that they cannot even afford to acquire adequate medicines or nutritious food.
  • The specific objective of the project is to mitigate the health hazards caused by arsenic groundwater through an integrated approach towards awareness, capacity building, and preventive measures.
  • From the background of the above-given context, it can be stated that Arsenic mitigation effort can not be successful unless the problem is addressed in a holistic manner with the active involvement of a wide range of stakeholders ranging from local communities to government bodies including active participation of the affected communities.
  • The project has focused on poverty reduction through escalating the capacity of the communities at different levels to help them. At the same time, it provides alternative safe sources of drinking water and assists arsenic-affected patients to get appropriate medical treatment ( in close collaboration with government health facilities ) and to regain their economic status.
