Role of groundwater in agrarian change in West Bengal and Bangladesh: A comparative Analysis

Funding Agency :
International Water Management Institute - IWMI
Proejct Period :
November 2020 - September 2023
Location :
Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna Division
Project Objective & Goal :

The main purpose of this study is to fill the following two (2) research gaps -

  1. Compare and contrast the trends in agricultural growth and changes in groundwater irrigation in West Bengal and Bangladesh using secondary district-level data from the early 1990s to recent years.

  2. Understand the role of policies and institutions of groundwater irrigation in the agrarian trajectory of these two regions. This data will help to find out a comparative picture of growth in agriculture between Bangladesh and West Bengal before and after the 1990s. This will help us to understand the policy differences that account for differences in agricultural growth in West Bengal and Bangladesh, given their very similar agro-ecological conditions.
