Glossary of WSP Terms

1	Aerated Pond/Lagoon	A natural or artificial wastewater treatment pond in which mechanical or diffused air aeration is used to supplement the oxygen supply
2	Anaerobic Lagoon	A wastewater or sludge treatment process that involves retention under anaerobic conditions
3	Biosolids	Solid organic matter recovered from municipal wastewater treatment that can be beneficially used, especially as a fertilizer. Biosolids are solids that have been stabilized within the treatment process
4	Bucket Latrine	A type of toilet wherein the feces with or without separation of urine are collected in a pail or bucket. Burial: A system of disposal for small volumes of feces, sludge or other solid wastes by digging a pit and covering it with earth
5	Contamination	The introduction into water of micro-organisms, chemicals, wastes, or wastewater in a concentration that makes the water unfit for its intended use
6	Desludging	Removal of sludge or settled solid matter from treatment tanks such as septic/Imhoff tank, aqua privy, interceptor tank or sedimentation tanks
7	Disposal	Discharge, deposit, injection, dumping, spilling, leaking, or placing of any liquid or solid waste on land or water so that it may enter the environment
8	Domestic wastewater	Wastewater derived principally from dwellings, business buildings, institutions, and the like. It may or may not contain groundwater, surface water, or storm water
9	Domestic sewage	Waste and wastewater from humans or household operations
10	Ecological sanitation	Sanitation whose design builds on the concept of protecting ecosystems, and which excreta as a valuable resource to be recycled

14	Landfill	A land disposal site that employs an engineering method of solid waste disposal to minimize environmental hazards and protect the quality of surface and subsurface waters
15	Off-site sanitation	System of sanitation where excreta are removed from the plot occupied by the dwelling and its immediate surroundings
16	On-site sanitation	System of sanitation where the means of collection, storage and treatment (where this exists) are contained within the plot occupied by the dwelling and its immediate surroundings
17	Pit latrine	Latrine with a pit for collection and decomposition of excreta and from which liquid infiltrates into the surrounding soil
18	Pour-flush latrine	Latrine that depends for its operation of small quantities of water, poured from a container by hand, to flush away faeces from the point of defecation
19	Sanitation	Interventions (usually construction of facilities such as latrines) that improve the management of excreta
20	Sewage sludge	A solid, semi-solid or liquid residue generated during the treatment of domestic sewage in treatment works. Sewage sludge includes, but is not limited to domestic septage; scum or solids removed in primary, secondary, or advanced wastewater treatment processes
21	Sewerage	The entire system of wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal
22	Sludge	Accumulated and concentrated solids generated within the wastewater treatment process that have not undergone stabilization
23	Wastewater	Liquid or waterborne wastes polluted or fouled from households or commercial or industrial operations, along with any sur face water, storm water, or groundwater infiltration
